If you start cleaning your children’s teeth when their baby teeth appear you’ll help them to continue caring for their adult teeth as they grow older. This article contains some great suggestions to help your child look after their dental health.

Tips For Healthy Kids Teeth

Follow these great tips  to get your child into a good oral hygiene routine:

Set the example

Children love to imitate their parents. Try to brush your teeth and floss at the same time as your child and they will likely feel more inclined to do so.

Start brushing your kid’s teeth when they are young

Healthy habits can last a lifetime. So help your little one brush twice a day every day. You can start when their first tooth appears as a baby. Simply use a cloth or small brush to clean it.  The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) states that you can start using fluoride toothpaste at 18 months, starting with an amount, about the size of a grain of rice.

After they have learned how to spit out the toothpaste you can increase it until you reach the size of a pea. From 3 years of age, you can teach your children how to brush their baby teeth on their own. When their teeth start growing together you can introduce flossing and mouthwash.

Take your child to the dentist

The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests taking your child to the dentist from 1 year of age or within 6 months of their first baby tooth appearing (whichever comes first). You should then visit the dentist every 6 months after that.

Open communication

Let your child know what to expect when they visit the dentist. Help reduce any anxiety by always being positive.

Reduce their sugar

One of the main causes of tooth decay is high sugar levels in the diet. If you help your child understand that eating too many sweets and drinking sugary drinks can damage their teeth, it may help them to listen to you.

Brush sufficiently

Kids should brush their teeth sufficiently to remove plaque. This will usually take at least 2 minutes. You can use tartar dyes or a timer to help them get used to the time. There are fun apps that kids can use too.

Consider sealants

You may consider using sealants on your child. Sealants help prevent cavities and tooth decay avoiding the need for fillings.

Don’t share toothbrushes

Toothbrushes harbor germs, so clearly identify them so that the germs don’t spread. Thoroughly rinsing their toothbrush with tap water after brushing will also keep the level of bacteria down.

When Kids Have Dental Complications

Sometimes children run into problems when their adult teeth are growing. The canines or the wisdom teeth sometimes don’t emerge as they should. An oral surgeon can help resolve these issues.
